Is it Legit?- Notice of Ongoing Scams/Fraudulent Products

Over the years, technology has become a wonderful tool of knowledge and accessibility for all. Technology helps our office to speed up process times and provide the customer service you deserve.

Technology has also had its challenges. With more access to information means we need more advanced security systems, education and awareness of the scams and fraud happening on a daily basis. Even the big corporate companies have scammers copying their logo and forms, pretending to offer a "too good to be true" rate of return with minimal risks.

Last week I had 2 clients contact our office with potential scam concerns, callers and people sending emails pretending to be from legitimate companies. Luckily the clients felt something was "off".

I wanted to take a moment first off by saying, We at Black's Financial Services care about the well being of our clients. If you are unsure, then feel free to ask! We always strive to offer the best products that fit the needs of our clients. If we can find that product you heard about, we will research and share our findings. As a broker, we often can accommodate most products for our clients. If not, we will point you in the right direction. But if the product is not legitimate, we have done our due diligence to protect you.

Here are a few tips to become more aware on your own:

  1. If the deal seems too good to be true, then it likely is not legit.

2. Companies will share their posted rates and promotions online. If you are unsure, locate the company's contact information and call direct. Do not call the numbers attached to a pamphlet or email. There ae no "Secret" or "Special" Deals.

3. The person who you are doing business with should have physically met you in person at one point or another. If dealing with business online, there are special protocols that need to be followed. It is a representatives legal responsibility to know our client, not only for customer service, but best practices and following Anti Money Laundering policies.

4. Do not give out personal information ahead of time.

5. No legit financial institution/Advisor will send you promotional emails without your consent.

6. A legitimate product will need your signature- either Docusign or Wet signature.

Please reach out if you have any other questions or concerns, as we are always here to help!
